1. In a Dream
This was the first song Peter wrote for the album. Dominic's guitar sounded so good playing this song we decided to have him play the whole first verse and bring the piano in later.
2. Time Will Tell
Peter wrote this song originally with a very distinct "rubato" (out of time) feel. Dominic felt very strongly that we should play "in time" and together. He was obviously right. Dominic and Peter recorded this song together in three takes.
3. What Lies Within
Peter wrote and recorded his piano part the morning before our 3rd recording day. Dominic felt it was "inspired" and immediately layed down his track with no rehearsal. The song continued to evolve. We asked Jaques to play on it. It was Peter's first time working with Jaques and Peter just couldn't believe how much emotion there was in Jaques cello playing. Finally, with Kenny's haunting layered vocal track, the song's soul is complete.
4. And We Danced
This is actually the first song we recorded together. Sort of our "getting to know you" song. The more we played it the more it took shape and when we got to a place where we thought it was feeling good, we went on to other songs agreeing that we'd come back to this one later. When we came back to it we agreed it sounded complete as it was and let it be.
5. Close to You
This was the first song that Kenny sang on. We had only asked him to sing on this one song on the record as a sort of "camio" appearance. But when we heard what beautiful work he did on this one we went running back for more.
6. Chasing the Sun
Peter came up with the piano part that is the backbone of this song. It was flowing and had good energy but no real melodic content and no real "evolution". Dominic added melody, rhythm and improvised thru the track and it really turned into something fun.
7. In Her Eyes
This is the really "quiet" song on the record. There is a "stillness" within the piano and guitar that we wanted to protect. Kenny's beautifully layered vocal pads seem to whisper the song to a deeper peace.
8. Gut Feeling
Dominic wrote this song in his hotel room the morning of our 5th recording day. We must have been playing very intuitively that day because if you listen, you'll hear that the piano and guitar are so intimately woven together it's almost as if they were one instrument.
9. Clockwork
Peter had the melody and chord changes for the song and a guitar pattern idea for Dominic to play. Dominic took it and weaved this beautifully layered tapestry of guitar fingerwork and harmonics for the piano and cello to glide effortlessly over.
10. Hand in Hand
This was the last song Peter brought to the project. He wasn't really sure if it was "working". Dominic's sensitive "rolling" guitar work really added a wonderful dimension to the song and gave it more "flow". Kenny's vocals gave it wings.
11. Folk Story
Dominic wrote this song the morning of our last session. Peter fell in love with it immediately and was thrilled to be given the melody to play. We recorded it in one take.
